Middle Mecklenburg
Together with the surrounding administrative districts of Bad Doberan and Guestrow, the Hanseatic Town of Rostock forms the middle of Mecklenburg. Bad Doberan and Güstow are, along with Rostock, the most important towns in the region and their infrastructure is considered to be the best developed in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
As is often the case in this area, the town of Bad Doberan has its origins in the founding of a Cistercian monastry in the 12th century. More unusual is the fact that the Gothic Cathedral, the towering church built by the monks, and its medieval fittings and interior décor have remained intact to this day– and, consequently, are fascinating for those visitors interested in history.
The skyline of Guestrow is dominated by two particularly picturesque buildings – on the one hand there is the Cathedral with its impressive, massive tower and, on the other hand, the Renaissance castle which served the Mecklenburg dukes as a residence from 1155 to 1695. Today Guestrow is a cultural focus point in the region with the Ernst Barlach Theatre, concerts, exhibitions and festivals.
However, we should not ignore the stiller, more rural side of Middle Mecklenburg as a contrast to the cultural events in Rostock, Bad Doberan and Guestrow. On first sight, the surrounding area has little charm but, on taking a closer look, nature reveals now rare treasures. Paved roads lined with corn poppies lead from one dreamy village to the next, sprawling beech forests tempt you to take walks or go on a bicycle trip. On one of the many lakes or on the River Warnow or River Nebel, you can also explore the idyllic countryside on a passenger boat, in a canoe, rowing boat or sailing boat.
